What is Consigning with Second Childhood?

We sell goods on consignment, which means that no money is received by the owner of the goods until 2 days after the goods are sold. Once sold, fees are taken, and the owner receives the balance.

Consignment is a way to sell no longer needed but still valuable items.   With children's clothing, and even maternity, sizes often change before clothes receive much wear.  Toys are often not played with very much, if at all - and sometimes they can still be brand-new.  The proceeds of the sales are split between the seller (consignor) and Second Childhood. By bringing a buyer and seller together at a pleasant, well organised store, both parties get the best possible exposure and quality deal.

Take advantage of our 18 years in Malvern, and the many thousands of customers who shop at our boutique!  Bring in your beautiful items and before you know it, you'll be walking away with cash in hand!

How do I consign my items?

ALL GOODS ARE TO BE IN WELL BEFORE 3 PM MONDAY TO FRIDAY.  NO CONSIGNMENTS ACCEPTED ON SATURDAYS.

Step 1:

Go through your items at home.  Separate Winter/Summer items.  We accept Autumn/Winter items starting February; Spring/Summer items starting August.  Ensure all items are clean/freshly washed and ironed, without any marks (no matter how small). Make sure no buttons are missing, no small pulled threads, pilling or obvious fading. After all, who's going to buy a parka in December? Or a beautiful Summer Dress in June?  Or if it's got a button missing or dirty?  Remember that if it doesn't sell you don't get it back, and we know it's not going to sell at that time of year and DEFINITELY, if it has a fault. Crinkled clothes also look awful on the racks.  The better presented, the more likely we accept it, and more likely it will sell for a decent price.

Hopefully we will sell at least 70% of your gear...we try to select goods that will sell, but we have such a huge quantity coming through the store each day, supply can be higher than demand. Therefore it's in your best interest for us to select only the best of what you have.

Step 2:

When you first consign your items with us, we open a Consignment Account for you on our computer system.  If time allows, we go through your items while you're there, so anything we decide not to take, you take home with you.  The accepted items are priced by us, and entered into your account, tagged, then put onto our shelves for sale.  We provide you with a List/Contract which details each item you have consigned with us.  Each item is individually tagged with your Consignment Number.  Due to our sophisticated computer system, we can at any given time identify which item belongs to which consignor.  Each time you bring items in for consignment, your account is updated.

Second Childhood determines the prices on all goods.  If you have a specific price in mind for an item please discuss it with us and we will decide if we accept the item for consignment.  Please understand however, that Catherine, owner of Second Childhood, Helen and Jane (who do the majority of the pricing), are very experienced and have run the boutique for many years.  They know what sells and what doesn't, and for how much.

If we have an influx of the same or similar items, the laws of supply and demand will mean that these particular items will have their prices reduced due to large quantities available.  Imagine, your high chair cost $300, so we price it for sale accordingly. The next day, we get in another 4 of the same highchair, hence the price comes down on all of them.  Or, we have a jacket in size 5 and three of the same jacket in size 6!  The size 6 jackets may be priced for less.

We use a different color price tag for each month. In this way we can tell when goods are due to be taken off the floor. Because you DO NOT receive unsold goods back if they don't sell (see terms & conditions), we reduce the price, often to less than half price in their last month on the floor. We figure that it's better to get something, than nothing!

Step 3:

Keep track of the final date of your consignment.  You may retrieve your unsold items before the final date of your consignment, however after 3 months, if items haven't sold or collected by you, they are automatically donated to HopeBuilders International - a charity which sends items to orphanages in Uganda, Rwanda and India.

Step 4:

Collect your money!  As your items sell, your account total increases.  At your leisure, you may visit our boutique to collect any funds owed to you (we pay you in cash/credit card/cheque, or direct deposit into a nominated bank account) - we also provide you with an itemised list of the items sold.  The arrangement/contract ends between us, once you receive payment for each sold item, and our "transaction" has been completed.

Consignment payment to you is:  50% of sold price, less selling fee and gst.  See Terms & Conditions of Consignment for further details.

Please be aware that by deciding to consign your items, you agree that your items are left at your own risk, in the unlikely event of damage, fire or theft.

Once your goods are placed for sale, they are to remain in store for the entire sale period (3 months).

Second Childhood reserves the right to reduce prices as required in order to sell an item - sometimes we need to strike while the iron is hot, other times we may find a fault.
