Many of you may know that International Children’s Day was celebrated on June 1st, the day on which we honour kids the world over. But what many of you may not know is that many countries mark the day on different dates during the year, including Australia! Apparently we have Children’s Day (as it’s universally known) on the second Sunday in July, but as Wikipedia drily notes, “it’s not widely known or celebrated”.
The well-being and welfare of children in all countries is the serious reason for the day, but maybe there’s a good reason why it’s not much known or celebrated here... I, for one, do enough for my children every day!
But the other reason it was established is to celebrate childhood. In this day and age with the information superhighway and a constant barrage of news, I think it’s really important to slow down, enjoy our children just being kids and delight in the principles of a ‘classic’ childhood.
“There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colours are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again.” -Elizabeth Lawrence
What’s your view I wonder?
